Horsham’s London 2012 Festival countdown will start with Sparks in the Park
CELEBRATIONS marking a year to the opening of the cultural olympiad, London 2012 Festival, are being held in Horsham at Sparks In The Park on July 24.
The free family event organised by Horsham District Council will run from noon to 5pm at Horsham Park.
Children’s TV presenter Dave Benson Phillips will be compering the Set4Success Youth Sports Challenge whilst Sarah Jane Honeywell from Cbeebies/BBC Mighty Mites will be performing on the main stage.
Sports for people to watch and take part in is a major part of the event but there will also be live music, dance, creative workshops, circus skills, carnival flag making, samba, and comedy entertainers.
For younger children the Active Play Zones includes inflatable fun, soft play and entertainment whilst older children can enjoy Bensons Fun Fair.
Sparks in the Park will finish with a grand finale of the colourful Shout Out Carnival parade.
The Sports Zone will include Have-a-Go Sports for all to watch or to take part in like badminton, volleyball, urban rebounding, football, karate, tennis, tri-golf and more.
Horsham Park Bowls Club will be hosting a free Open Day and Pavilions in the Park team will be offering special activities throughout the afternoon.
As part of this Sports Zone Horsham’s first ‘Set4Success Horsham District Youth Challenge’ will take place where elite athletes from local schools will compete against each other as part of the launch of the new Set4Success funding scheme now established to support young Horsham district sporting champions of the future.
One of the Sparks in the Park highlights this year will be the Shout Out Carnival; an energetic and flamboyant carnival procession through Horsham Park with some fantastic giant-size costumes.
Throughout the afternoon visitors can take part in workshops making colourful flags for the parade, joining in samba workshops and decorating a giant carnival cube.
Visitors should get to the park early to get their flags made in time for the parade at 4pm.
Within the carnival procession is the Blue Touch Paper section supported by the Strawford Centre, Horsham.
The project brings disabled and non disabled people together to plan, share skills and make top quality carnival in an accessible way so that everybody can take part.
Creative talent from local performers and artists will be on display.
Taking place on and around the stage will be performances from the Lemon and Lime Theatre, Phoenix Street Dance, Act 2, Fi-Steps, Vocademy and more.
