More area students passing grad test

Preliminary state data show that about 75 percent of Miami Valley public high school sophomores who took the Ohio Graduation Test in March passed all five sections, an increase of several percentage points from the last two years.

All but seven of the 50 school districts in the five-county region showed improvement to the 10th-graders’ test scores, according to the preliminary data from the Ohio Department of Education.

But the region also recorded Ohio’s highest and lowest success percentages.

With a 97 percent passage rate, Oakwood City Schools tied Solon City Schools for Ohio’s best success on all five tests.

Jefferson Twp. Local Schools had the lowest statewide number at 15.4 percent.

“We know we are bad,” said Jefferson Twp. Superintendent Richard Gates. “But we will have significant (gains) in fiscal year 2012 — it’s not even a question, I guarantee it.”

Districts can still challenge the results; the numbers will not be finalized until the state report cards are released in the fall.

About 11,218 of the 14,963 sophomores in the five-county region (Butler, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Warren counties) who took the graduation test passed all subjects: reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, according to the preliminary data.

By comparison, about 10,591 of 14,765 Miami Valley sophomores (71.7 percent) passed all subjects in 2010, while 10,382 of 14,507, (71.5 percent) passed in 2009.

Statewide, about 69.5 percent of the 129,425 sophomores tested this year passed all sections, up from 65.8 percent in 2010.

Sophomores who do not pass the graduation test will have other opportunities to do so, but passage is a requirement of earning a high school diploma.

Besides Oakwood, the other highest-performing districts in the Miami Valley include Springboro Community City School District (93.7 percent), Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools (92.8 percent) and Centerville City Schools (90.3 percent).

Oakwood consistently ranks in the top 10 school districts in Ohio for scores on all five subjects of the graduation test. Last month, Oakwood and Bellbrook high schools were rated among the best in the nation, according to Newsweek magazine’s annual ranking of high schools. Oakwood received its highest ranking ever at 151, while Bellbrook ranked 1,349th among the 1,480 schools on the Newsweek list.

“We have excellent teachers who teach the standards and who prepare students not only for the content, but to be critical-thinkers as well,” said Kim Kappler Hewitt, Oakwood’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment. “We serve a community that highly values education: Both students and parents take learning very seriously here.

BIOGRAPHY

Eric Gordon served the Cleveland Metropolitan School District as its Chief Academic Officer from 2007-2011, when the Cleveland Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint him as Chief Executive Officer.  Mr. Gordon was one of the major architects of the District's Academic Transformation Plan that garnered national recognition for its dramatic approach to top-to-bottom school reform.

Under his leadership, CMSD has engaged in the development of a three-tiered academic improvement model that focuses on both traditional academic achievement strategies and also on improving the conditions for learning for students and families. The strategy produced dramatic reductions in serious safety incidents, suspensions, and expulsions in Cleveland's schools and overall increases in student attendance, an increase in achievement test scores, and the District's highest-ever state rating of Continuous Improvement. With a commitment to providing high quality education for urban students, Mr. Gordon implemented a district-wide scope and sequence curriculum and implemented the CMSD's conditions for learning "Humanware" strategy.

Prior to joining the leadership team at CMSD, Mr. Gordon taught in the New Orleans Public Schools and the Toledo Public Schools and has served as a high school principal in urban, rural, and suburban school districts.  In 2001, he was recruited to the Columbus area to serve as founding principal for the rapidly-growing Olentangy Local School District's second high school.  Under his leadership, the school was named a School of Distinction by the state of Ohio for higher-than-predicted performance of special education students on the Ohio Graduation Tests. While at Olentangy, Mr. Gordon was appointed to the position of Executive Director of Secondary Learning, where he was responsible for curriculum and instruction, special education services, student data and accountability, supervision of personnel, and opening of new schools for grades 6-12.

He is actively involved in practitioner leadership with the Common Core State Standards through a partnership with the Gates Foundation, the Council of the Great City Schools, and the American Federation of Teachers.  He maintains active involvement in practitioner leadership with Social and Emotional Learning standards through a partnership with the NoVo Foundation and the Center for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning.
