Book It, Part 7: Social Intervention and Picture Books

Last week I had the amazing experience of attending and presenting at the Social Thinking® Providers' Conference in South San Francisco, California. The conference is designed to share updates and interventions related to the Social Thinking methodology for assessing and treating students with High-Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, and related diagnoses and issues.

Social Thinking and its interventions (which in this population are targeted to bring about what we call "social skills") deal with helping students "consider the points of view, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, prior knowledge and intentions of others" (see www . socialthinking . com ) and apply skills accordingly. Because this process involves thinking about the underlying social circumstances of varied situations and what people are thinking and feeling based on events that occur, picture books can often be a visual and engaging way to establish some key concepts with these students.

Let's take, for example, one of the earliest concepts that is explored in the curriculum, that of "expected and unexpected behaviors" (detailed in a number of Michelle Garcia Winner's books, including the Think Social curriculum). The thinking behind this concept is that for any particular situation, there are a set of (often unstated) rules we are expected to follow. When we do so and our behavior is "expected," others notice and feel good about us being in their presence. This leads to positive consequences such as invitations to play, etc. When we break these rules, our behavior is "unexpected," and others certainly notice. As a result, they think uncomfortable thoughts about us and may avoid or even tease us. This leads to another key concept in the curriculum: our behaviors change others' thoughts and feelings. Kids often pick up on this vocabulary and conceptual instruction very easily and can begin to apply the related skills of, say, being able to take turns when playing a game or speaking in conversation.

When I am beginning to work with a group or even a classroom setting where this language can be carried over, I sometimes start with the picture book No, David! (and others in the series) by David Shannon.  No, David!, based on a book of sketches the author made about himself as a young kid, depicts with minimal text and humorous illustrations the questionable choices (indeed, unexpected behaviors) of the title character across the course of a day.
