Le'Roi Simmonds, Arranger for Rising Stars Steel Orchestra, Speaks
- “I was about 10 years of age. I was part of an afterschool program called ‘Downstreet Youth in Action.’ It was a program geared to keep the youth of the Virgin Islands off the streets. However the program ended because of the destruction brought about by Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. When the program started back up in early 1996, it became Downstreet Pandemonium Youth Steel Orchestra, as the steel pan was used to bring back the old members - as well as bring in new members. At first I wasn’t going to go back to the program, but after months of my mother insisting that I do go back, (she loves pan by the way) I finally went - and the rest was history.” - “Being that there is a steel band in just about every school on St. Thomas, many of my relatives have played pan at some point in their lives.” - You say that your Mom loves pan.Channel Islands High School - News

OUHSD/news | Channel Islands' team wins Microsoft Web Design contest
A group of Channel Islands High School students won the third prize in a statewide web design contest sponsored by Microsoft.
Edward Chua, Kristian Dadacay, John Suarez and Ignacio Tapia, also known as “JTEK” team won the Microsoft Bliink competition by beating out 73 other middle and high school teams.
The contest allows contestants to use Microsoft Studio Expressions design program to build their web sites. The software giant expanded the pilot run of the competition that was previously was only open to LA area MESA schools.
Teams are judged on creativity, organization, visual presentation and communication. Teams are docked points for broken links, copyright violations and information that are not sourced.
For many students this was their first time at creating web designs and gave them an early look at potential careers in this field. This year teams submitted a design using the theme “Imagine a future made better by technology.”
First prize went to “Team Alpha” from Alhambra High School and second place went to “LAHS15” from Los Angeles Senior High School.
The three teams get prizes from Microsoft when they are recognized at regional MESA days this month.
MESA’s strong partnership with industry is a large motivator behind its success. Students are exposed to technical fields at an early age and learn that they have the potential to become engineers, mathematicians or scientists.
MESA, an academic preparation program that each year serves about 20,000 California pre-college, community college and university students who are educationally disadvantaged, is an awarding winning program with a model that works. Seventy percent of MESA high school graduates statewide went directly to college after graduation compared to 48 percent of all California graduates. Sixty percent of MESA students go on to math, science or engineering majors.
