About a month ago I picked up some Buffalo nickels at a yard sale. Most are dateless and in poor shape. Of the 563 coins in the lot this one was the second to the last one checked. I think it may be a doubled die. Though, it may be pointless due to its condition. The doubling on this coin is weaker in the low areas like the bridge of the nose and the top and bottom of the neck. But it is stronger in the higher areas especially in the eye. The Buffalos I have with machine doubling show the effect in the lower areas as well as higher areas and in a flat or shelved fashion. So is this a doubled die? I feel that it may be due to the differences from the coins showing machine doubling, but I am far from being an expert. These are the best shots I could get.
