&Ldquo; For example, the Indian chief design on the obverse of Bela Lyon Pratt’s gold $2.50 and $5 coins has a lot of detail. The Indian chief is wearing an ornate war bonnet decorated with beads, feathers, cloth and other materials. The casual observer might not give this much thought, but those little details add to the authenticity of the design. It’s the same with the Walking Liberty, as you want to see and understand the entire design.” His friend nodded as they began examining Weinman’s classic Walking Liberty. They discussed the symbolism behind the 1916 issuance as America was edging closer to war. A message was being sent to the world with Liberty being draped with a U.S. flag over her flowing gown and wearing what appears to be a modified Phrygian or Liberty Cap. She has Roman-style sandals adorning her feet. In her left arm she cradles a bundle of oak and laurel branches symbolizing military and civilian honors. The message might be that America would defend Liberty and would fight if provoked. Liberty strides toward a rising sun, perhaps symbolizing America’s ascendency to the world stage. The reverse design features a muscular-looking standing eagle on a rock or perhaps a ledge with wings partially extended—perhaps preparing for flight and combat. An interesting detail includes a gnarly pine tree in front of the eagle similar to those seen on windblown western mountains and hills. The reason for the pine tree might be artistic or it might represent something else. The mix of Liberty’s clothing, including the Roman sandals, all leads to a design that has had many interpretations. He finished his tutorial concluding, “Keep in mind that Lady Liberty is a very artistic design and that her gown, for instance, has many dimensions that just don’t strike up on the coin. So you really need to be observant. Once you have all the details in mind you can decide what you’re looking for and what imperfections you are willing to accept.

Buffalo Nickel Doubling Question ID - Coin Community Forum

About a month ago I picked up some Buffalo nickels at a yard sale. Most are dateless and in poor shape. Of the 563 coins in the lot this one was the second to the last one checked. I think it may be a doubled die. Though, it may be pointless due to its condition. The doubling on this coin is weaker in the low areas like the bridge of the nose and the top and bottom of the neck. But it is stronger in the higher areas especially in the eye. The Buffalos I have with machine doubling show the effect in the lower areas as well as higher areas and in a flat or shelved fashion. So is this a doubled die? I feel that it may be due to the differences from the coins showing machine doubling, but I am far from being an expert. These are the best shots I could get.
