Low Anthem
A rising alternative folk quartet based in Providence, Rhode Island, thrives on combining unusual instruments in thoughtfully chosen and equipped recording environments that the band members deem conducive to creative brainstorming. And the group’s instincts appear to be right on the money, because over the past few years the approach has yielded some highly idiosyncratic and subtly powerful music.Smart Flesh , took its sonic shape in direct response to chilly, cavernous conditions in the converted Rhode Island warehouse (a onetime pasta sauce factory) selected for its unusual ambient resonance as the album’s primary recording site.
“The space was really the main instrument for the whole record,” says Ben Knox Miller, the group’s lead singer, primary songwriter, and acoustic guitarist. “The resonance was chilling. Everything after that was a secondary instrument, a choice of what tool we used to activate this beautiful instrument that we were inhabiting.”
The quartet—Miller, versatile singer/instrumentalists Jeff Prystowsky, Jocie Adams, and Mat Davidson—actively seek out instruments seldom employed by contemporary bands and then explore new musical contexts in which to combine disparate tones and timbres. Smart Flesh features antique pump organs, jaw harp, musical saw, stylophone, hammered dulcimer, zither, and a booming 26-inch kick drum.
“We’re collectors of odd instruments,” Miller says, adding with a laugh that the band’s passion for vintage pump organs borders on fetish. “We scour yard sales and antique shops all over the country as we travel.”
As a guitarist, Miller’s evolution reflects ongoing adjustments to his role as the band’s main songwriter, which stemmed from the departure of original member Dan Lefkowitz. Once a devoted fingerpicker with a penchant for altered tunings, he cites Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges, and John Fahey as early influences.
“For about four years I didn’t play anything in standard tuning. I wrote a lot of instrumentals,” Miller says. “My sense of harmony has always been informed by that.”
But the requirements of ensemble arrangements and a snowballing emphasis on songwriting spurred Miller to change his approach. He quit employing open tunings “cold turkey” and also began to absorb country sensibilities, revisiting the seminal work of Hank Williams and others, then moving forward to contemporary torchbearers such as Ryan Adams.
