Officials: Enjoy Lake Champlain Fourth of July - News Story - WPTZ ...

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- State officials say Lake Champlain is open for business, and they encourage all Vermonters to enjoy it this Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Bob Wainwright set out in his boat from Perkins Pier for the first time this year, and this holiday weekend he'll enjoy it even more.

"We sit right in the dock. We're right underneath the fireworks. It couldn't be a better seat," Wainwright said.

Nearby at Breakwaters, state officials send a friendly reminder: Lake Champlain is below flood stage. They encourage all Vermonters to come out.

"The lieutenant governor and I watched this turn from a flood zone to an extraordinary opportunity for recreational enjoyment," Gov. Peter Shumlin said.

Shumlin said people can enjoy boating, biking, going for a stroll and fishing.

"We have great fish. The fishing is better than ever. Those fish got fat on that high water," Shumlin said.

There's no question, officials said, about the water being safe.

"The water has been tested and has been repeatedly found safe. I even took a dunk myself," Lt. Gov. Phil Scott said.

On top of that, Scott has been hands-on with getting several lakefront businesses back to normal.

"Yesterday, I was working on the ferry a little bit, directing traffic," Scott said. "I worked right here at Breakwaters serving customers."

But lawmakers said the true test of faith is people checking out the lakefront for themselves.

Meantime, sailor Bob Wainwright is more than happy to be a trailblazer.

"We're glad to be back and we're going to take advantage of it," Wainwright said. "And hopefully Mother Nature will be good to us this summer."

People can check out the Burlington Fireworks at the Waterfront Sunday starting at 9:30 p.m.
