Ankeny residents search family roots
The Ankeny Genealogy Chapter helps members learn who they are through researching family roots using the Kirkendall library's online subscription to Ancestry.com.
The group learned about the latest editions and updates to Ancestry.com during their monthly meeting on June 27 at the library.
Ancestry.com is the world's largest online family history resource - including historical records, photos, stories, family trees and a collaborative community of millions. Ancestry.com sponsors the NBC series "Who Do You Think You Are," in which celebrities discover family stories tied to historical events.
The database contains military records, obituaries, census data, and immigration records that are easy to search.
The site also offers tips on how to search for a family's part in historical events.
The library edition of Ancestry.com is only available at Kirkendall Public Library through the city's website.
The Ankeny Genealogy Chapter meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the library for an educational meeting. Different elements of genealogy searching are explored, from cemetery records to mining public documents. Programs include hands-on learning, members sharing their genealogy or computer expertise and guest speakers.
The Ankeny Genealogy Chapter sponsors trips to the Family History Center in Ames and the State Genealogy Library in Des Moines, where the members also serve as volunteers.
New members are always welcome.
A family membership to the Ankeny Genealogy Chapter is $10 per year. For more information, contact 965-6458 or jtofteland@ankenyiowa.gov .
