Bond set for Lake Worth teen charged in crash that killed two passengers

A Lake Worth teen involved in a vehicle crash that killed two passengers in February has been arrested on multiple charges.

This morning, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Edward H. Fine ordered Luis Angel Betancourt be held in lieu of $25,000 bond, with the option of a supervised release.

Fine also agreed to the terms the State Attorney's Office and Attorney Douglas Rudman reached, which include not operating a vehicle and no possession of alcohol.

Betancourt, 18, was charged on two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of DUI manslaughter and a count each of causing or contributing to serious bodily injury while under the influence, and causing or contributing to injury to person or property while under the influence, the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office said Tuesday.

Authorities said that on the morning of Feb. 12, Betancourt was driving along a wet stretch of Lake Osborne Road in West Palm Beach when he lost control of his Ford F-150 truck and crashed into a tree. The crash killed Vicente Huerta, 18, and Ubana Hernandez-Molina 16, and hospitalized 17-year-old Johan Martinez-Garcia with serious injuries

A fourth passenger, Armando Nava, 18, was not hurt. Betancourt also escaped the crash without injury. Investigators said that alcohol played a role in the crash.

Betancourt told The Palm Beach Post in February that he was driving friends home and had consumed just one beer.

At his first appearance, the court ordered a bond of $25,000, and ordered he be placed on supervised own recognizance. His release was subject to several conditions: That he not possess or consume alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription drugs without a valid prescription; operate any motor vehicle; violate any state law; or frequent any establishment whose primary purpose is to serve alcohol.

• After lighting fireworks, make sure you move away quickly and don't stand over the fireworks.
