Australia can't wait to say g'day to recruiters
So, where the bloody hell are you? The infamous £100m advertising campaign may not have worked wonders for the Australian tourism industry, but for many British recruiters the lure of good surf and even better work opportunities may be too good to resist. “Someone coming over here can get eight interviews and eight job offers in a matter of days,” says Niall Hamill, founder of the Andersen Partnership. “Demand is huge, but there’s so little supply. The shortage is hindering our growth plans, as people have left the industry and there simply isn’t the same volume coming over from the UK as there used to be.”
“You want to know how it is? Since coming here I’ve had to do no business development work whatsoever,” adds Claire O’Dwyer, country manager of McCall Australia, which has set up a rec-to-rec office in Sydney. “Potential employers see our website and ask who we’ve got. As for those candidates who’ve shown commitment by jumping on a plane and coming here – agencies are biting my arm off for those.”
Australia is suffering from a talent drought. Industry body the Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA) says the sector faces “a severe shortage” and is already struggling to fill 400 vacancies. This is before the employment economy really starts picking up: Manpower estimates a balance of 21% of Australian companies – particularly in IT, minerals, resources and health – plan to recruit. Australia’s staff shortage is partly self-inflicted.
Although Australia never went into recession during what is there called the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), large parts of business overreacted and put a hold on recruitment. As a result many, many recruiters – half, according to some estimates – lost their jobs as larger consultancies made big cuts and some 200-odd smaller agencies went under.
As a consequence 4,241 recruiters left the industry, of which less than 10% have returned. They included many Brits, who have traditionally accounted for a huge part of the profession, but who went home after picking up the Australian equivalent of a P45.
“Australia may not have gone through recession, but it didn’t stop a lot of layoffs,” says Craig Bowater, group executive director at Australian-based recruiter Aurec.
“A lot of clients sensed the market was in trouble and stopped hiring. If you had a good existing relationship the client usually stuck with you, but trying to build a new relationship was almost impossible.
