Should Google Buy Hulu?

There’s nothing close to a done deal, of course, and it makes sense for these tech companies to at least kick the tires on bright and shiny toys. Hulu may not even be really for sale, just as it didn’t really have an IPO (yet) after that idea floated last year.

But Google is perhaps the most intriguing, and nettlesome, potential suitor for Hulu. Here is why:

The Pluses: For Hulu, Google could be an ideal partner because of its experience owning the most popular video site on the planet, YouTube, and because of its foothold in mobile with the Google Android system for phones and tablet computers. As we keep hearing over and over, the future is video unleashed from the Web or from your TV screen, and instead available anywhere and everywhere people want to watch. Google in theory can get Hulu to that future earlier than perhaps any other buyer.

For its part, Google has wanted to seed YouTube with more and more professional TV shows, movies, music videos and more, rather than being seen primarily as the Internet version of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” as a home for  clips of minor sibling spats . Piling Hulu into the Google portfolio would automatically upgrade the search giant’s storehouse of popular entertainment content. More content, more money for Google.

“We believe the combination of YouTube’s user generated content and Hulu’s professional content could deliver strong synergies for [Google] and better position it to capture a greater share of the online video and branded advertising market,” wrote Barclays analyst Anthony DiClemente in a research note today.

The Minuses: One big question mark is whether Google is able to acquire, well, anything. Already, every deal Google does it picked over left, right and sideways by regulators. One reason Groupon walked away from a possible $6 billion sale to Google last year was the daily-discount company didn’t want to get bogged down in antitrust limbo for months. (Also, Groupon chose to make probably a whole lot more money in an IPO .) And that failed Groupon deal was before the heat really turned up on Google with the FTC’s broad investigation into whether Google abuses its stranglehold in the Web-search market.

Also, media companies have not always seen Google as a friend. For example, they were reluctant to make their Web-video offerings to be seen on Google TV, the company’s effort to marry the best of Web video with the best of TV. (By the way, does anyone out there own a Google TV device? Anyone? Hello?) If Google buys Hulu, how would the media companies respond? Already Hulu’s media company owners — which include Deal Journal parent company News Corp. — have divided views about how much of their entertainment offerings to load up for free viewing on Hulu. If Google owns Hulu, there will be so much more to argue about.
