Math game receives $500000 grant

WINCHESTER - Scott Laidlaw's work is anything but a game.

Laidlaw, a 1989 Handley High graduate, is an educator, business owner and designer of a computer math game, "Ko's Journey," which teaches the subject to middle school students through a 12-hour rite-of-passage story.

"All of the math action makes sense within the storyline," said Laidlaw, who lives in Taos, N.M.

His company, Imagine Education, which he leads with Jennifer Harris, has received a $500,000 grant to instruct teachers on how to utilize the software in their classrooms.

Laidlaw is the company's CEO, while Harris is the CFO. "There is no way this would be pulled off without her," he said of Harris and the grant.

The Next Generation Learning Challenges' money comes from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Through the grant, Imagine will bring together teachers at 10 schools across the nation and train them in using "Ko's Journey," Laidlaw said recently by telephone.

A documentary, capturing the process of teachers bringing "Ko's Journey" into classrooms and student stories, will be produced by April and sent to every middle school in the nation, Laidlaw said.

Schools in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. are set to be included, he said. Imagine partnered on the grant with the Florida Virtual School, which will also participate.

The teachers will convene in September and filming begins in October, said Laidlaw, whose parents, Jim and Barbara still live in Winchester.

Laidlaw's local ties also extend to a former teacher, Madlon Laster, his sixth-grade English teacher at Daniel Morgan Middle School.

He often calls Laster, who retired in 2000, to bounce ideas off her. "Madlon is awesome," he said.

Laster of Winchester returned the sentiment. "He has been so dedicated to this," she said of Laidlaw's work on "Ko's Journey." "He's just a great guy all around."

But, he's more than that. He's an educator she respects.

"I think what he's doing is right in line for 21st-century education," she said.

It uses technology, which compelling children to reason through a situation, she said. "It's not just math work."

Laidlaw developed the game after introducing more low-tech games into the middle-school classes at the small school where he once worked.

The spark for the games came from a massive write-on map Laidlaw ordered from the SkyMall catalogue. He created a simple math game that worked with his students' studies on the spice trade. When they saw the map, their eyes lit up, he said. They constantly asked "do we get to play the game today?" he said.

Horse Racing Games Online

Online horse racing games are becoming more popular because of their convenience. Truly, the internet has changed the way we look at a lot of things. Today, a lot of things can be done online and horse racing is just one of those things. People like online horse racing games because this enables them to enjoy the thrill of a horse race without the hassles of having to go to a track.

There are various types of online horse racing games. Some just broadcast the results of actual races online and allow people to bet on those events. Some are actual games in which a person can play the part of the jockey and race his horse against others to win prizes or to get bragging rights. Other online horse racing games put players in the shoes of a trainer. They take care of their virtual thoroughbreds and train them for races against other players.

Although these games can be quite entertaining for some people, the fact remains that most people play online horse racing games because of the gambling. Online horse racing games provide what a gambler needs without requiring that person to even leave the comfort of his chair.

Betting in online horse racing games are done electronically. People’s bets in online horse racing games can be categorized into two:

1) Monetary – Of course, most of the people who bet on online horse racing games do so with real money. How do they do this? This can usually done through credit cards or an electronic transfer. Some people can also choose to apply for an electronic account which may be reloaded through the bank.

One issue concerning the online horse racing game is the fact that the prizes at stake are not really as big as what you would expect to win in an actual race track. This may be because of the fact that online horse racing games are still in their early stages. This means that fewer people bet on these races compared to betting on the track.

2) In-game – certain MMORPGs or Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games incorporate a sort of online horse racing game in order to add excitement. Often, the prize at stake is a rare item which can be used within the game. Simulation online horse racing games such as the training game talked about earlier can also hold races with in-game prizes at stake. These items often have properties that would improve your chances every time you race. There are also people who sell these in-game items for actual cash.
