Parents May Not Be Aware of Alternative Medicine Risks
According to researchers at Sydney’s Children’s Hospital, that the use of alternative medicines and complementary treatments for children is becoming increasingly widespread, with the number of children taking alternative medications doubling since 2002.
However, most parents are unaware of the possible side-effects that alternative medications and complementary treatments may have on children because they are not being told about the dangers of these types of treatments.
The researchers also found that most parents choose alternative therapies for their children because of personal recommendations or because of the benefits of alternative medications highlighted that are highlighted in advertisements on television and in magazines. The researchers also found that most parents consider these medications safe and cost effective.
Yet, according to Professor Andrew Day, the senior author of the study, parents should check with their child’s doctor before putting their child on any type of alternative medications. He also stated that clinicians must be open to discussing these treatments with parents in order to bring any possible side-effects to their attention.
Many of these alternative medicines may interact with standard medicines he warns.
"Some of these medicines do interact with standard therapies, or some of the alternatives are not proven in terms of having side-effects. What is known about them in adults may not be the same as how they may affect children”, said Professor Day.

Alternative Medicine:
The terms ‘alternative medicine,’ ‘complementary medicine,’ or ‘unconventional medicine’ refer to diagnostic methods, treatments and therapies that appear not to conform to standard medical practice, or are not generally taught at accredited medical schools. The scope of alternative medicine is broad, with widespread use among the American public of a long list of treatments and practices, such as acupuncture, homeopathy, relaxation techniques, and herbal remedies. In an editorial about alternative practices in the New England Journal of Medicine, Murray and Rubel comment, ‘Many are well known, others are exotic and mysterious, and some are dangerous.’1 This report will help to clarify and categorize the alternative medical systems most often used, create a context to assess their utility (or lack thereof), and discuss how physicians and the medical profession might deal with the issues surrounding these unconventional measures in health and healing. At the turn of the last century, the effort led by the American Medical Association (AMA) to improve the quality of medical education and bring quality controls to curricula ultimately led to the landmark report by Flexner in 1910.
