Haggis and rugby? Scrum-tious

A fat, 55-year-old man, unaccustomed to and unfit for athletic pursuit, I nevertheless stood in the middle of a rugby field, in short pants, waiting for the start of a demanding and dangerous game I had never played before.

I had never even seen it played.

How could this happen?

I was punishing myself.

Three years ago, a chieftain of The Illinois St. Andrew Society, the local association of and for the seriously Scottish, informed my superiors — of which there are many —  that I was a Very Bad Man.

In describing a Robert Burns Supper held in Wilmette, I had apparently dwelled too much on the haggis.

In so doing, I had insulted Burns — the bard of Scotland — and all Scots, presumably. Even though Chicago Scots are not exactly a downtrodden minority, I was chastened by the accusation of ethnic insensitivity.

Since then I had, albeit somewhat casually, sought to make amends.

I found a way last month. The Chicago Highland Games, the annual two-day festival of all things Scottish, would feature a haggis-eating contest, in addition to the bagpipe-playing and tossing around of phone poles and such. So I could pay my debt to local Scottish society by cheerfully nauseating myself.

Hearing my plan, my pal Mike Martinez, managing editor of several minor metropolitan newspapers, told me, “I know a guy who can help you get this haggis thing done.”

But as it turned out, Jack Crombie had not the slightest knowledge of Highland Games haggis. What he did know about was rugby.

In a delightfully rich Scots brogue, he told me how his mates of a tavern team of yesteryear would once again trod the rugby pitch in search of honor. They would play in a 35-and-over Old Boys exhibition during a break in the festival’s official tournament.

“I just want to play enough so that I’m gloriously covered in mud when I go to the beer tent,” he said.

It sounded cooler when he said it than it looks here.

The cool factor may have something to do with why I eventually agreed to not only compete at the haggis table, but also play in the Old Boys game as well. I did so even though, as it turned out, Martinez himself is one of the Old Boys, and now seemed to be filling the role of both instigator and witness.

Girl does not look that strong. She is small frame but still able to pick the guy who is quite heavy. Other participants seems to have liked and enjoyed it. Would have loved to see a wrestling match between the two and then girl lifting the man after winning the match. Asian girls are strong. Lift and carry is a good fetish and fantasy to have.Its quite strange to understand that how females are able to lift and carry their partners with such ease.Sometime it becomes so difficult for men also to lift other people but some women does it with so much ease. Thats what is called woman power. Some ladies are strong genitically. They get in their genes through their parents. To some people it may look bad sad and depressing to see lift and carry but for me it is quite satisfying and fulfilling and my hobby. Sometimes it becomes comedy and funny if not performed properly.
