Health inspectors shocked by conditions at Framingham dental lab
It might be assumed that the dentures people put in their mouths are manufactured to high standards in a clean, sterile environment. But health inspectors say the conditions they found recently at a makeshift denture lab in a downtown warehouse are not only unsanitary, but revolting.
"It's hard to describe, because it was so bad," said Board of Health Director Ethan Mascoop, who said he found hundreds of things wrong at Newton Dental Lab's 763 Waverly St. facility.
Despite that, the town and state are powerless to shut down the business.
Local officials are calling for legislators to solve the root problem: licenses aren't required for such laboratories; that means no regulatory oversight.
Police found technician Donald Canton's lab on June 3 when they investigated a local woman's complaint. She told police Canton had taken her dental impressions, and her $380, but failed to have her dentures ready on time.
After looking around the lab, police called the Board of Health.
Canton was making and handling dentures amid piles of trash, discarded food, materials and debris. Inspectors watched him perform intricate work in the small industrial space near broken egg shells and orange peels. There was water damage, and mold growing on the wall, Mascoop said.
Inspectors learned Canton was working directly with patients, and also filling prescriptions for fitted dentures sent in by dentists in Newton, Wellesley and Waltham, Mascoop said.
After a call from the town, the state Board of Registration in Dentistry ordered Canton to stop practicing dentistry without a license.
Still, the town and state can't stop him from manufacturing dentures.
"It does not come squarely under the Board of Health's authority or jurisdiction," Mascoop said. "It doesn't come under anyone. ... From my perspective it is very, very frustrating because we don't have the ability to take action."
The state, too, is concerned, said Jean Pontikas, director of the state Division of Health Professions Licensure. The economy is driving more people to buy dentures or dental appliances directly from manufacturers, rather than through a dentist, she said.
"Individuals aren't able to access dental services for economic reasons," Pontikas said.
Canton previously ran his business in Newtonville, where inspectors there found he was hoarding trash, rotten food and other debris. Newton found the conditions there amounted to a public health nuisance.

"They think the dentists charge them too much money, so they look me up and ask me to repair their dentures," he said. A fully uniformed Newton police officer once bought new pairs of dentures directly from Canton, he said.
Denture Reline Kit | Fix your dentures in a matter of minutes ...
Whether it’s eating, drinking, or talking, having dentures that aren’t securely fasted to your gums is quite annoying, and most of the timeā¦painful. Most people do not have the luxury of dental insurance and have to deal with this pain. If you can’t afford the dentist because of these tough economic times, and you’re the kind of person that has to suffer with constant pain, you’re not the only one. There are many people in today’s society that are experiencing the same thing you are. Luckily, there are great solutions that: are easy to perform, are cheap and inexpensive, provide a better and smoother surface on your dentures that aligns properly with your gums, will discontinue your pain and discomfort, fit securely in your mouth, and that will prevent you from spending hours and hours at the dentist.
How Does a Denture Reline Kit Work?A denture reline kit realigns your dentures to fit securely against your gums. They will work for a couple of months and are so low in cost that you won’t have to spend tons of money at the dentist. You will be able to make the corrections in the comfort of your own home, rather than spending time in a dentist’s chair. You can learn how to perform these fixes on your own and you can use your any time you want. It is recommended to keep a denture reline kit handy so you are prepared in the event of an emergency. When relining your dentures, the process takes about 15 to 20 minutes for each plate. Once you get more comfortable relining your dentures, you’ll start to cut down fix time and start spending more time doing what you love.
The Steps to Using a Denture Reline KitFirst you are going to need to clean your teeth with a bristled brush, followed by drying them with a towel or soft cloth.
Second, you will need to apply some type of petroleum glue/jelly to the outside of your dentures. This will protect your teeth and make the clean up quick and easy. Within each denture reline kit are 2 compartments; one with a powder and another with liquid.
Mix the two together. (It’s good to remember to reline one piece/plate at a time). Now, after you’ve mixed the two into a smooth paste (which takes about 10 seconds), you are going to smear the mixture onto the part of your dentures that touch your gums. Now put the dentures in your mouth until it is positioned correctly. Close your mouth slowly and tightly to mold the form of your gums to the reline mixture. Hold for 4 to 5 minutes. Next, remove your dentures and rinse with cold water until all the petroleum jelly has been washed away. Dry your denture plate and repeat for the 2nd plate. If you have any questions, be sure to read your denture reline kit instruction packet that came with your repair kit.
