Vassil rolls to fifth straight Senior golf title at CC of Scranton
You can't hope to stop him. Heck, you might not even be able to contain him any more. Mike Vassil just keeps rolling when it comes to the Country club of Scranton's Men's Senior Championship. The ageless wonder coasted to a five-shot victory with rounds of 72 and 74. Tim Burns took second with rounds of 79 and 72. The Senior Club Championship is also a qualifier for the Senior Coal Scuttle to be played at Fox Hill Country Club on Aug. 24. Other members of the team will be Fran Hamm (79-75), John Voigt (79-75) and Ed Mesko (73-81). The first alternate is Kerry Maloney (77-78) and second alternate is Tom Sohns (76-79).

Wonder if Pat Chipak will be heading to the courthouse to change her name to Pat Chip-in after doing that on hole No. 17 in the Ladies Golf Organization Ts and Fs event? Other highlights of the week were Roberta Kelly with her birdie on No. 12, and chip-ins by Dee Ann Florey on No. 6, Kathy Myers on No. 11 and Cathy Wendolowski on No. 17. The nine-hole winner was Kelly with Rachel Winebrake second. Bette Connell was the 18-hole winner, with Wendy Seamans and Marilyn Striepeck tying for second. Peggy Knoebel (14) and Lorraine Daniels (27) had low putts for nine and 18, respectively.

Eleanor Jones and Carol Chermak posted a 65 on the North course to win the annual Memorial Tournament, a tribute to all the club's deceased members. Sally O'Brien and Shirley Kenehan were second, and Yvonne Cronkey and Linda Sproul, both with 66s. Fourth were Sue Berry and Sherry Wall with 67, and Kay Rhiew and Jeanne Nicholas were fifth with 69. Nine-hole league captain-and-crew winners were Alice Manley, Pat Swisher and Joyce Rittenhouse, with the squad of Karen Sproul, Loraine Cestone, Jean Curtin and Mary Sweeney second. Will Swisher and Alex Altier played great golf to finish at 3-under 143 (71-72) on the par-73 South Course, capturing the Junior Member-Member tournament by four shots over a team to surely be a force in the future, the Cestone twins, Michael and Frank, only 12 years old, who posted 74-73-147. David Harris and John Comerford were third at 150. Props to Altier also for winning the Anthracite Golf Association Junior Tour event on June 26 at Frosty Valley Country Club with a solid score of 73.

On the one hand, it’s Tracy Morgan, weird supporting player in “30 Rock,” former cast member of “SNL,” and star of A Blaffair to Rememblack , so obviously the man gets some leeway not just for creative license but to account for the crazy. But his humor is typically sophomoric and less offensive than it is simply batty non-sequitur. It’s funny because it doesn’t make any goddamn sense. When Morgan begins to string sentences together in a coherent fashion, you get a sense of what kind of ugly is bubling underneath.
Maybe. Or maybe it’s all a joke gone bad. Is Morgan really a homophobic asshole? Would Tina Fey — supporter of LGBT issues — really work with someone who meant these things earnestly? Or was it all shtick?
I have no idea, but it’s pretty insidious. As part of his stand up routine earlier this week, Morgan delivered a monologue — transcribed by someone in attendance — which has created a hell of a controversy this morning. People are calling on Morgan to explain himself; others are asking Tina Fey to call Morgan out; and people are starting to call for his removal from “30 Rock.” My guess is that, if those calls get too loud, NBC will listen. “30 Rock” doesn’t come back until January, so there’s plenty of time to either let this die down or reformulate the show. The one thing that that Tina Fey can’t do for the next six months is to respond to it with a topical episode.
Anyway, this is what he said during a stand-up routine:
Mr. Morgan took it upon himself to mention about how he feels all this gay shit was crazy and that women are a gift from God and that “Born this Way” is bullshit, gay is a choice, and the reason he knows this is exactly because “God don’t make no mistakes” (referring to God not making someone gay cause that would be a mistake).
He said that there is no way a woman could love and have sexual desire for another woman, that’s just a woman pretending because she hates a fucking man. He took time to visit the bullshit of this bullying stuff and informed us that the gays needed to quit being pussies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying.
He mentioned that gay was something kids learn from the media and programming, and that bullied kids should just bust some ass and beat those other little fuckers that bully them, not whine about it. He said if his son that was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little ni**er to death.
