Possumwood Acres sets great example

Business really picks up for Possumwood Acres after a hurricane passes through Eastern North Carolina. That’s when many find baby animals that have been injured or separated from their moms and bring them to the Hubert-based wildlife rehabilitation facility. Once there, the trained staff determines whether or not the animals can be helped medically and the ones that can’t are humanely euthanized, while the ones that have a chance are given medical treatment and nurtured. Over the years, Possumwood Acres, a nonprofit, has nursed thousands of animals and birds back to health. Most are returned to their natural surroundings to begin new, healthy lives. Those that cannot be released back to their natural habitats often end up as permanent residents of Possumwood, used to educate individuals about wildlife and the environment. Recently, a group of children at Northwoods Elementary School had the opportunity to meet a squirrel their classroom had “adopted” after he became a permanent resident of Possumwood. The squirrel, Squirrelly Boy, performed for the kids by running on his wheel, battling a stuffed hedgehog and climbing the sides of his cage. Students were also introduced to three other creatures the classes had adopted, both in person and through photographs. The kids raised the money to help feed and care for the animals. Not many think about it, but medical care and, for those who remain at Possumwood, the expenses of continued maintenance are not inconsiderable. Possumwood and the welfare of their furred and feathered residents depend on donations and, as Blanche DuBois from Tennessee Williams’ immortal classic, A Streetcar Named Desire, liked to say, “the kindness of strangers.” Many times individuals find immature or injured wildlife and take it to Possumwood where they assume the animal will be taken care of — and they’re right: The animals receive the care they need. But Possumwood, like other wonderful wildlife groups in the area, can’t operate off good intentions alone. Helping by making a donation, no matter how small, keeps these places alive and doing good works. And for those who like to give a different way, Possumwood also has both the room and the need for volunteers. Possumwood Acres is by no means the only wildlife rehabilitation facility in the area, but it is a great example of what caring, involved people can do on a shoestring, without government support. Those second graders at Northwoods Elementary School have it right: Support endeavors like Possumwood Acres and make the world a better place, one baby squirrel at a time.

Ty has a lock on fun, you can guarantee it! With their line of Beanie Babies that covers the gamut from the natural world to cartoon characters, the awesome is almost too much to bear, speaking of nature. And what have we here? Why, nothing less than one of the cutest little guys in all of the animal kingdom – the hedgehog . Despite his name, he isn’t a pig, nor is he an investor. What he ‘is’ is a cuddly pal ready for all sorts of adventures and games.

Just look at that cute white belly, those lively dark eyes, that happy-go-lucky expression, those quills that sprout from him like some sort of wild ’80s metal band ‘do. Of course we can’t forget the posture. This little stuffed hedgehog is just begging for hugs and cuddles! It’s like he’s saying, “I’m small and cute, but oh-so-lovable and sweet. Won’t you take me home with you?” We would, if we were you. With all the charm and character that this little guy packs into such a pint-sized package (okay, so he’s only 8 inches tall), Sonic has absolutely ‘nothing’ on him. So you’re a digital blue critter who can spin super fast? Well, Prickles here doesn’t need some video game franchise to tell him he’s cool. He just ‘knows’ it. As we write this, we can’t help picturing him in a Toy Story environment. Imagine if you had a whole army of these things, or a huge collection of stuffed animals for him to play with when you weren’t around? Not that he’ll get much down time. It would be a crime to let this little guy go.
