Here are some tips for avoiding accidents and firing up the fun.

Grills Inspect the firebox. Extensive rust or cracks usually mandate a new grill.

• Check burner tubes. If you see cracks or holes, check your owner's manual or the manufacturer's website for the right replacement.

• Check grates. Cracked or rusted porcelain-coated grates must be replaced. Bare-cast grates needs to be periodically oiled to prevent rust.

• Check hoses and regulators for leaks. Spray soapy water on the propane tank's gas line and regulator. If you don't see bubbles but smell gas, you can replace the hoses and a regulator for around $20.

• Check drip pans for cracks and corrosion and replace if necessary. Lining them with aluminum foil can cause grease to accumulate and catch fire.

Check the owner's manual for repairs that should only be performed by a professional.

• Keep grills at least 10 feet from any building.

• Never use gas or kerosene to light a charcoal fire.

• Never try to restart a flame by adding lighting fluid to an already-lit grill, as this can cause a flare-up.

• Have a spray bottle or fire extinguisher handy.

Yard

• Check for roots or other tripping hazards.

• Check for plants like poison ivy.

Play sets

• Make sure equipment is anchored safely in the ground, that S-hooks are entirely closed and bolts are not protruding.

• Check for spaces that could trap children, such as openings in guardrails or between ladder rungs. These spaces should measure less than 3½ inches or more than 9 inches.

• Rake through sandboxes to check for debris or sharp objects. Also, inspect for any animal contamination or insect problems.

• For securing hammocks and tree swings, use all-purpose solid braid or twisted nylon rope that resists abrasion, sunlight, rot and mildew.
