Summer reading programs abound at Seattle-area libraries
Young readers who join local library systems' summer reading programs can earn free books, baseball tickets and other prizes.
At the Seattle Public Library, children who read 10 books will receive a free paperback book and a pass to the Burke Museum. For teens, librarians hid copies of popular steampunk titles around Seattle; teens who find and read one of the books, and then post a comment on the library's teen blog ( blog.spl.org/yablog/2011/05/27/steampunk-summer-2011 ), will win a free book.
Seattle's summer reading program also offers dozens of free art activities, shows and workshops at branch libraries. Highlights include puppet shows by Oregon Shadow Theatre and Thistle Theatre, Woodland Park Zoo animal presentations and a juggling comedy show. Programs run through Aug. 26. For more information, call 206-386-4636, visit your local branch or search the library's website using the words "summer reading program."
In the King County Library System, children ages 5 to 12 earn a cup and bookmark for reading 500 minutes; for 1,000 minutes by Aug. 31, they win a kaleidoscope and a chance in a drawing for a laptop computer. Preschoolers can also win prizes by tracking their reading activities. Branch library programs will include puppet shows, storytelling and magic shows. More information: www.kcls.org/srp or 425-462-9600.
Teens who create video book reviews and post them on YouTube by July 31 can win a $150 gift certificate in KCLS's Read.Flip.Win contest ( http://www.kcls.org/teens/rfw/ ).
At Sno-Isle Regional Libraries, children receive a free book after listing 10 books on a reading log; readers who surpass that with an additional 10 books may enter a prize drawing. The deadline is Aug. 15. Summer reading participants receive free Everett AquaSox tickets, while supplies last.
Children can also solve a musical mystery with singer Eric Ode, hear stories from around the world and learn about ancient Egypt at programs hosted by various branch libraries. For more information, visit www.sno-isle.org/?ID=5677 or call 877-766-4753.

Save Our Wild Salmon: Seattle's Burke Museum runs "Gauntlet"
The program started off with author Steve Hawley reading from his just-released book about Columbia Basin salmon – Recovering a Lost River: Removing Dams, Rewilding Salmon, and Revitalizing Communities. He focused on a chapter about Puget Sound orcas, and how their fate hinges on how we as a region and nation decide to address the steep decline of chinook salmon stocks in the Columbia Basin. Our orcas are literally starving to death. The future of Puget Sound orca depends on Filmmaker Jim Norton introduced his film as an exploration into the degree to which we have damaged what was once the most productive salmon landscape on the planet, and the misguided and ultimately ineffective lengths that we have gone to techno-fix salmon back to abundance. The film suggests that a new approach is long overdue. All the evidence tells us this needed, but we haven’t quite (yet!) turned the corner to make it happen.
