Shade receives prestigious award

Arnetta Louise Shade, born in Fort Wayne, to Joe Shade Jr. and Kim Parrish-Shade, is charismatic, exuberant, endearing, articulate, scholarly, independent and opinionated. Essentially, Arnetta is "young, gifted and black." Thus, it is not surprising she is the recipient of several Butler University awards. Perusing the numerous accolades and achievements of this Northrop High School graduate, one discovers, Arnetta has many pursuits.

Undertaking a rigorous schedule at Northrop, Shade's name continuously appeared on the Honor Roll. She has received awards from the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, the Fort Wayne Urban League National Achievers Society and the Northrop High School Big Orange Pride Marching Band as its Color Guard of the Year.

Listening to this inspiring youth, I wanted to know the impact her parents had on her academic performance. From Arnetta, I learned her parents set goals for her, and if the goals of her parents were for her to make a "B," her goals involved striving for an "A."

Arnetta said, "My dad (who earned his B.S. in computer science from Alabama A&M-her mother earned her B.S. in environmental health from Purdue University) always said if you get anything less than a 'B,' you're in trouble. I knew if I made an 'A,' I'd be safe."

In addition to being scholarly, Arnetta has been a school and community servant/leader. For four years, she participated in Show Choir. Because of her dance prowess, she was a designated captain for the Charisma Show Choir. For three years, Shade served as a peer mediator and a member of Northrop's Marching Band, in which she became guard captain. As a freshman and sophomore, Arnetta served on Student Council, and her junior and senior years, she busied herself more as a teaching assistant for the Teaching Academy while volunteering with the National Honor Society. Completing an active senior year as a Peer Mediation Team captain, mentor to freshman mediators, tutor in Spanish and secretary of Orientations United, Arnetta claims readiness for university life.

When asked, "From whom did you acquire your independence?" Arnetta said, "I acquired that trait from my grandmother, Mrs. Mattie Louise Shade." Though never competitive with her sister Sabra (a Northrop graduate and the athletic one), Arnetta admits to being the better dancer and singer.

Aside from the aforementioned, Arnetta served her church and community in the following capacities: Aids Task Force participant and organizer (2010- 2011), Voices of Unity Youth Choir (2005-2010), Pilgrim Baptist Church Choir (1998-present), Delta Sigma Theta Delta G.E.M.S.(2009-2011), Fort Wayne Urban League Read and Rise Program (2008-2011), and Pilgrim Baptist Church: Nursery (2006-present), Youth Usher Board (2007-present); and Video Ministry (2008 -2011).

A hero died just the other day. Now the name of this hero is not one you will read in your history books in the decades to come. This hero is simply a small town American hero. A very small town! Mullins SC boasts a population of just over 5000 persons and before this hero, perhaps  its only claim to fame is that it is home to the “South Carolina Tobacco Museum”. When you travel to Mullins, leave your GPS home because except for 2 or 3 tertiary roads, most paths of egress are nameless dirt roads…..winding through the middle of fields of tobacco, corn, soybeans and collards. There is little of much of the modern world that has touched Mullins. What has touched Mullins is home-grown southern charm coupled with a love of God and country found mostly in other small towns just like it. The students at Mullins HS are taught the 3 sacred beliefs always….God, Family, Country….and the students eat, drink and breathe those truths every day of their lives.

Gunnery Sgt. Ralph E. Pate, Jr. was an explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to Second EOD Company, Eighth Engineer Support Battalion, Second Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune, NC. Joining the Marines in 1998, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in 2009. Sgt. Pate served 4 separate deployments during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was deployed twice for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. This American hero received the following decorations during his illustrious military career:

Gunnery Sgt. Ralph E. Pate’s funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon in the High School where he practiced his 3 sacred beliefs…and that leads me to the next part of the tale.

There is a church whose members expound hate with a vehemence probably never seen before by a group of congregants of a religious affiliation.  Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an independent Baptist church known for its extreme stance against homosexuality. Protest activities practiced by its members includes picketing funerals and desecrating the American flag. The church is widely described as a hate group, and it’s activities are monitored by both the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center.
