GYMPIE may have rated poorly as a holiday destination by the writers of Lonely Planet, but visitors to actually set foot in the region reckon it is a great part of the world.

The Lonely Planet’s new edition, Queensland & the Great Barrier Reef Travel Guide released yesterday, says little has happened in Gympie since the gold rush days.

Despite four authors spending 130 days in Queensland for research, they failed to discover the Gympie Region and instead assumed Gympie and Rainbow Beach were part of the Fraser Coast.

The guide was also wrong about Gympie’s population, which was about 8000 residents less than it is currently.

These discrepancies have led many Gympie residents to wonder where the writers found their information.

Lonely Planet publishers say the authors are independent, dedicated travellers who visit every destination in the guide, personally visiting hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, galleries, museums and more.

By the look of it, their stop in Gympie was brief. Emilia’s, Kingston House and Capelli on Duke rated a mention, along with the Gympie Muster, Valley Rattler and the Woodworks and Mining Museums.

Several key annual events for the area were overlooked, such as the Gympie Gold Rush Festival and the Heart of Gold International Film Festival.

At least Gympie is a blip on the radar, some would say.

Mary Valley appears to have been overlooked, but Rainbow Beach businesses should be happy. The area received a glowing, three-page review, covering all accommodation, dining and entertainment.

“Gorgeous Rainbow Beach...is a rising star of Queensland’s coastal beauty spots.

Sea Trek – Episode 4 – Great Barrier Reef part 1 | Great Barrier Reef

Featuring a Loggerhead Turtle and Green Sea Turtles laying eggs. Brief encounters with Grey Reef and White Tip Reef Sharks. Episode 4 is mostly focused on reproduction. Part 1 of 3, Episode four of the documentary series: Sea Trek, with Martha Holmes and Michael deGruy. One of the far more obscure shows and documentary series from the BBC. Sea Trek dated back to 1992, has seldom been repeated (if ever) and has long been out of production on VHS video. No DVD release has been made. At the time, the plastic bubble equipment and being able to talk underwater was pretty revolutionary.
