27th annual Tigard Festival of Balloons lifts off under pleasant skies

TIGARD -- As soon as the hot air balloon came off the truck and onto the grass of Tigard's Cook Park, it became clear who its pilot was.

Alan Sanderson gathered his crew of about five for a quick huddle, calmly going over the setup process and safety precautions. Sanderson's balloon -- named "Mothra" -- lay bunched on the ground, its basket turned on its side.

Soon the crew went to work, gradually spreading out the balloon as a fan began filling it with cold air. Once it had taken shape, Sanderson climbed into the basket -- still on its side -- tilted it upward slightly and ignited the large propane burner. Hot air lifted the balloon, pulling the basket upright while still on the ground. Sanderson's crew held it in place.

Ready for liftoff. Two passengers climbed in, and Sanderson fired up the burner again. Mothra gently lifted from the ground -- just after sunlight finally pierced what had been a cloudy morning.

"You get up there, and it's quiet," said Sanderson, who lives in Albany. "Except when you're operating the burner."

Sanderson is one of 17 pilots participating in this year's 27th annual Tigard Festival of Balloons , which began Friday. Balloons starting floating above Cook Park before 6 a.m.; Sanderson's was among the last ones to take off around 7 a.m.

Most of the balloons drifted south from the park at first. Crew members on the ground drove off in trucks hoping to track the pilots and meet them at the end of their flights. Balloons are largely at the mercy of the wind, but pilots can change direction by finding different air currents at different elevations.

"That's the only way we can steer," said Sanderson, who's been flying balloons for 19 years. "It's kind of micro-meteorology -- air currents that a small plane wouldn't see."

This year's 17 pilots are about the same number the event has seen in past years. But this year's festival includes a few additions, said executive director Cindy Padilla, including the 5,000-meter Twilight Run race that filled all 500 registration spots.

"We actually sold the run out, which is phenomenal for a first-year run," Padilla said.

Other staples of the three-day festival remain: the carnival rides, vendors, music and the like.  The Festival of Cars , an exhibition of both classic and modern cars, takes over Cook Park on Sunday.

If you want to see the balloons themselves, there are two options -- get up early Saturday or Sunday, when the balloons begin taking off around 5:45 a.m., or come back at dusk for the "night glow." That's when balloons will light their burners at Cook Park under the night sky, but remain tethered to the ground.
