Yet while many job seekers know the basics of CV writing, there are still quite a number of people, who fail to build this important professional document, according to human resource experts.“There is a lot of research evidence to suggest that the CV is where most people kill their own career dreams,” Emodek Emmanuel, a Dar es Salaam-based career advisor, says “When they say that a CV is a real killer they mean it. This can mean two things: it can be a killer in a positive way, meaning it is the tool you can utilise to link your key skills and abilities with real life achievements, which will guarantee you a job; or in a negative way, the gaffes one makes in writing the resume can be the career dream killer.” According to him, 80 per cent of the resumes he has come across since he began his career are not original, and so, do not express much about the person applying for the job. He adds that more often than not, hiring managers who select CVs have busy schedules. “In most cases, they want to select only a few from a huge pile of CVs. So, if yours is not clear enough, badly laid out, or contains irrelevant information, they will just move on to the next CV.” In addition, Emodek points out that a good number of CVs lack flow. One must know what should come first, followed by what in writing a CV, he says. “Usually, personal details come on top, but always keep it in mind that there are a few personal details you should include on a CV. It is not an opportunity to write down unnecessary details about your life.” There is a pretty fine line between selling yourself and overselling yourself. Too many resumes overstate the importance of job responsibilities. For example, the career coach notes, most job seekers with limited experience are often tempted to try to put themselves in a ‘management’ light, using phrases like ‘spearheaded high-profile projects through supervision of others, leading by example.’ Most job candidates feel uneasy discussing salary requirements. For good reason: Giving a number that’s too high or too low can cost you the job. You should keep it out of your application materials entirely, unless the hiring manager asks for it.

Career coaches often advise that if the potential employer specifically asks for it, you should give them a range. But even still, that information should be reserved for the cover letter and not put on the CV. If you have the option, save that discussion for a later stage of the interviewing process, ideally once the interviewer brings it up.
