Cake - Showroom of Compassion
Debuted at number one.So, what should one expect on one’s re-introduction? Much the same, really. Bone-dry wit, with sparse arrangements that allow plenty of room for John McCrea to impart his often peculiar, generally amusing views. Anyone who remember Cake fondly from their nineties heyday will not be surprised by the sound of Showroom Of Compassion . Their stilted lounge-funk template remains in place, powered by Gabriel Nelson’s rubbery basslines, and coloured by Vincent DiFiore’s mariachi-esque trumpet and cornet work. Also in place are the liberal daubs of cheesy Moog keys, and Xan McCurdy’s flat, buzzing baritone guitar licks. If you liked all of these things the first time, you’ll like them again here. The major difference though, is happening at front and centre.
It’s notable that McCready is playing it straighter on Showroom Of Compassion for anything but a pop ballad, and yet there isn’t a pop singer alive that sounds a thing like McCrea, and there’s not a band around that would drape squelchy keyboards and those mariachi trumpets all over such a tender song. Except, of course, for Cake.
It’s possible to overload on whimsy, though. With the exception of the excellent line, “my plastic utensil has broken in half”, Bound Away is the where this strategy falls apart. A hokey folk song about life on the road, it is the one song where the band strays too far into pastiche territory, where their eclecticism sounds more like genre tourism. For the most part though, Cake is too weird to be contrived. Obviously, unrestrained weirdness is not for everyone.
